Hello and welcome everyone. Thank you for subscribing to Journey to the West Daily, First and foremost, don’t worry, I’m not going to send you a chapter everyday since each chapter has a lot of references to folklore and religion. Journey to the West is a complex and long (but worth it!) story and I want you to take your time to absorb it, so I’m going to send you a chapter every two or three days.
The translation we’re going to read is the unabridged one published by Anthony Christopher Yu, an American sinologist that published a translation of The Journey to the West in four volumes into English from 1977 to 1983. I wanted to add that I don’t earn any money by sharing the chapters published in this website.
I will accompany each chapter with notes if clarification is needed or if I consider that you need an explanation of a concept.
In the next days you will receive three different emails. In the first email (09/11), you will read an analysis of our protagonist, Tang Sanzang. In the second email (11/11), about Sun Wukong. In the third email (13/11), about the rest of companions. I decided not to add an analysis of the characters of Sha Wujing and Bai Long Ma because there’s not so much meaning hidden behind their characters in comparison with the others. I think the actions of our main three are more important and relevant to understand the story since, at the end, it’s a moral story and they represent different approaches to spirituality, unlike our local ogre and horse.
I am looking forward to this journey with you. Let me know through my Tumblr page if you need more information about certain topics.
See you soon!
